What to Bring:

Automotive Fluids

Motor oil, used antifreeze, and other auto fluids may be brought to the collection for safe disposal.

Rechargeable batteries

Nicad, lithium, and button batteries should be brought for proper disposal.  Alkaline batteries may be disposed of with your household trash.

Paints and Chemicals

Oil based paint, solvents, varnishes, pool and hobby chemicals can all be brought to the collection for safe disposal.

Lawn and Garden Chemicals

Both pesticides and fertilizers should be brought for disposal, as run-off from fertilizers can cause environmental damage.

Furniture polish, chlorine bleach, drain cleaners, metal polishes and any cleaners labeled Danger! Poison! Warning! and Caution!

Fluorescent Bulbs and Mercury Containing Devices

Fluorescent bulbs and thermometers or manometers containing mercury can also be brought to our office.

What Not to Bring:

Alkaline batteries

Newer alkaline batteries may be disposed of with your household trash.

Asbestos

Asbestos should be handled by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor.  Contact the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources at (802)891-5958 for a list of contractors. The WSI landfill in Moretown can also accept up to 10 cubic yards of asbestos.  You must make arrangements with the scale house operator at (800)891-5476.

Ammunition and Explosives

Please contact the State Patrol Explosives Unit at (802)244-8727 to arrange for proper disposal of ammunition, fireworks, and flares.

Medical Waste

Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors contain a small amount of radioactive material that can be dangerous if broken open. They should be sent via ground shipping, not air, to the manufacturer.  Mark the package "for disposal." Two common manufacturers of smoke detectors are First Alert (800)387-4219 and American Sensors (800)387-4219.

Latex Paint

Latex paint is not hazardous.  It can be allowed to dry and then placed in your household trash.  You can also bring it to Newton's Decorating Center, 10 Valley Crossroads, St. Albans, (802)524-9258.  They run a free reuse program for latex paint.
