Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Northwest Solid Waste Management District.  Below is a list of the most commonly asked questions.

How do I get rid of household trash and recycling?

District residents generally have two options for disposing of household trash and recyclables: bringing it to a drop-off site or transfer station , or hiring a private hauler .

Do I have to recycle?

Yes, recycling is mandatory in all District communities.  Recycling is required for the following materials:

  • paper and cardboard
  • glass bottles and jars
  • plastics #1 - #7
  • metal cans
  • aluminum cans, foil, pie plates, etc.

For additional details see our Recycling Information Page.

How do I get rid of old paint, motor oil, and household cleaners?

Latex based paint in good condition bring to Newton's Decorating Center located at 10 Valley Crossroads, St. Albans 05478.  For latex paint in not so good condition, mix with either sand or kitty litter.  Let it dry out then dispose of it in your regular trash. Oil based paint and the other items may be brought to a household hazardous waste collection .  All collections are open to residents of every District community.

How do I dispose of oversized items like furniture, tires, and construction waste?

These items may be brought to a special trash collection .  There are small fees for some items.  All collections are open to residents of every District community.

Is my town in the District?
Currently, the following communities are members of the District:

What do I do if I am not a member of the District?

Non-member towns are required by the state to offer household hazardous waste collections.  Contact your local town clerk for dates and times.

Even if you are not in the District, you can still recycle.  Most of the private haulers offer recycling services in non-District towns.
